Why The Airbus A350-1000 Is The Only Jet That Can Fly Sydney To London Nonstop
Qantas is preparing the world's longest nonstop commercial route, linking Sydney to London. The mission uses the Airbus A350-1000ULR, a variant developed specifically for ultra-long-range flights. The nonstop leg covers about 9,188 nautical miles (10,573 miles or 17,016 kilometers) and is expected to exceed 20 hours. Qantas ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs from Airbus in May 2022 under its Project Sunrise plan to launch direct Sydney-London and Sydney-New York services. The first aircraft is slated for arrival next April, with the inaugural service following later in the year. To enable the extreme distance, the -1000ULR features substantial modifications to the baseline -1000 variant, including a rear center fuel tank. The rear tank adds about 5,283 US gallons (20,000 liters) of usable fuel, lifting total capacity to 48,893 gallons (185,076 liters) and enabling a range up to 9,800 nautical miles. Structural reinforcements support a higher maximum take-off weight, marking the most significant change between the -1000ULR and the standard variant. This configuration aims to deliver direct Australia-to-UK connectivity long sought by the industry.
