Man drowns while trying to save dog on Minnesota's Gun Lake, sheriff says
A man drowned Sunday on Gun Lake in northern Minnesota while attempting to rescue a dog, authorities said. A 911 caller reported hearing cries for help around 12:30 p.m. and observed someone struggling in the lake. Neighbors arriving to assist found an empty boat and located the man underwater after about 15 minutes of searching. CPR was performed on the shore, but the man, identified as 47-year-old Randy Benson, died at the scene.
The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office released the victim's name and said the investigation is ongoing. The incident underscores the dangers of swift-water rescues and the volatility of lake conditions when dogs are near water. Officials have not released details about the dog's welfare or whether it was rescued. The sheriff urged caution for anyone entering lakes without proper safety equipment and training.
The community mourns the loss as investigators review responses from bystanders and responders. The case adds to a string of weekend aquatic emergencies across the region. No foul play is suspected in this drowning, according to the sheriff. Further updates are expected as authorities complete the scene review.
