Airbus secures €3 billion to advance commercial aircraft research
Airbus secured €3 billion in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to expand commercial aircraft research and development across its aviation portfolio. Based in Blagnac, France, Airbus will use the funding to support advanced aerospace technologies and integrated aircraft systems through 2030, with the loan described as the largest commercial financing in the EIB’s history. The engineering work will be carried out across France, Germany, and Spain, giving Airbus additional flexibility to sustain long development cycles that begin years before new aircraft enter service. The company said its research focus spans commercial aviation and also includes security and defense technologies, emphasizing long-term innovation. Although Airbus did not name specific aircraft programs, its broader research portfolio covers structures, advanced manufacturing, sustainable propulsion, and integrated aircraft systems. The article notes that many technologies remain in development for years and require extensive testing and certification before adoption by airlines.
