American Airlines is nearing a decision on a widebody order that could involve as many as 65 aircraft and potentially bring Airbus back into its long-haul fleet after a six-year gap. The airline is evaluating proposals from both Airbus and Boeing, with the near-term focus on replacing its aging fleet of 47 Boeing 777-200ERs. American’s Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper told Airliner World the outcome “could go either way,” describing the process as nearing the endgame, though no firm announcement has been made. Any number reported as “up to 65” may include options or purchase rights and could be smaller. The decision also factors in future network planning beyond replacement. American’s current widebody mix includes 20 Boeing 777-300ERs, 37 787-8s, and 33 787-9s, with deliveries for deferred Dreamliners moved to 2028 and beyond. Airbus options discussed most often include the A330-900, with the A350-900 also possible.
