Average airfare on 72 domestic routes rises 20.5% in June from a year ago: DGCA data

Average airfare on 72 domestic routes rose 20.5% in June 2026 compared with May 2025, according to data cited by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The increase was reported in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol. Mohol said airlines’ operating costs are constantly changing, with key drivers including the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in international markets, foreign exchange rates, excise duties and value added tax (VAT), as well as lease rentals. ATF alone accounts for an estimated 35% to 40% of operating expenses. The government noted that fares are not regulated.
