Britain to fund repairs to Chernobyl power plant hit by Russian drone attack
Britain will provide £17 million to help repair the Chernobyl power plant after it was hit by a Russian drone attack, with the funding aimed at restoring the site’s damaged protective shelter and ventilation. The UK said corrosion could pose longer-term environmental and safety risks. Chancellor Andy Burnham is seeking to bolster support for Ukraine amid “dark and difficult days,” while Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband pledged that Britain will “stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine” until it prevails. The pledge is coordinated through a wider programme led with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and supported by the G7. The announcement came as Prime Minister hosted Volodymyr Zelensky at Downing Street, where Zelensky received an honor guard from the Irish Guards.
