China Shows Its Sixth-Generation Fighter Refueling for the First Time: The YY-20 Tanker Extending Its Pacific Reach
China displayed its sixth-generation fighter refueling for the first time in official media, highlighting a shift toward longer-range air-power projection. In a promotional film marking ten years of service for the Y-20 transport, the People’s Liberation Army included footage of a YY-20 aerial tanker conducting refueling operations, ending with a sixth-generation tailless fighter joining alongside. Analysts interpreted the sequence as the first official appearance of any sixth-generation fighter in another country’s state-run production footage, while the tanker-fighter pairing suggested China is extending reach across the Pacific. The YY-20 carries about 90 tons of fuel, roughly a fivefold increase over earlier converted H-6 tankers that carried under 30 tons. Satellite and release-based assessments by Janes found the tanker fleet growing from a single aircraft in early 2022 to at least eight within a year, supporting a plan beyond the First Island Chain. The clip added to attention surrounding a Chengdu fighter design widely referred to as J-36, though the article notes it has no official designation.
