Copa Airlines sticks to no-hedge stance as fuel shock tests airlines

Copa Airlines' stance on fuel hedging remains fixed as it confronts a price shock tied to the war in Iran. CEO Pedro Heilbron told Reuters in Rio de Janeiro on June 7 that the Panamanian carrier has not hedged fuel for more than a decade and does not plan to start now, effectively absorbing the cost as yields are adjusted. He described the impact as partial rather than 100%, noting that industry-wide fare increases are constrained by competition and demand sensitivity. He added that Copa's strong liquidity and conservative balance sheet provide flexibility to weather volatility. Copa operates a hub model from Panama that connects destinations across the Americas and has historically flown only Boeing aircraft. The carrier recently agreed to buy up to 60 737 MAX jets to support expansion and fleet renewal, with deliveries scheduled from 2030 to 2034. The order offers flexibility across MAX variants and includes options for the larger MAX 10, though the final mix remains to be decided. Boeing's deliveries have improved, arriving on time or slightly ahead of schedule, underpinning Copa's growth plans.
