Copilot of United jet that struck a light pole realized flight was...
The copilot of a United Airlines passenger jet realized the approach was low but did not call for an aborted landing in time after the aircraft struck a light pole during its descent at Newark Liberty International Airport on May 3, 2026. The pilot and crew described a loud thump and a mild jolt just before touchdown, and the first officer indicated the aircraft was still slow and a little low. The flight originated from Venice, Italy, aboard a Boeing 677 with more than 200 people onboard; it landed safely but sustained fuselage damage. Initial law enforcement reports had said the plane struck a bakery truck, but the NTSB’s early findings indicate debris from the light pole hit a truck on the New Jersey Turnpike. None of the passengers or crew were injured, and a final report is expected next year.
