Devastated groom left at UK airport after easyJet overbooks honeymoon flight
A newlywed couple say their honeymoon at first collapsed after easyJet overbooked their flight out of Gatwick on July 26. Andy and Katya Wedlake arrived for their 8:25 a.m. easyJet service to Montenegro, but they were refused boarding even though they were traveling for their trip. The couple said they couldn’t check in online the night before due to the overbooking, and that once boarding closed the airline would only give seats if other passengers didn’t show up. With just one volunteer seat available, easyJet told them either Katya or Andy had to take it or both would be marked as “no show,” risking rebooking and compensation. Katya flew alone; the couple reunited 21 hours later in Montenegro. easyJet said it had reached out to apologize, provide the compensation due, and offer goodwill, noting overbooking is used in a “small proportion” of cases to keep fares lower, and that decisions are based on check-in order if volunteers aren’t available.
