Discovery Channel team locates Pan Am plane lost off Puerto Rican coast in 1952, NBC's 'Today' reports

Discovery Channel’s search for a 1952 Pan Am crash highlights how a long-missing airliner wreck can be found with modern underwater tools. NBC’s Today reported that a Discovery Channel team located the wreckage of the “Clipper Endeavor,” which crashed off Puerto Rico after a Pan Am flight from San Juan to New York on April 11, 1952. The aircraft had 64 passengers and five crew members; both right-side engines were lost shortly after takeoff, and 52 died, while 17 survived, according to the Pan Am Historical Foundation. The crash site’s general area was known, but the exact location was not. Using an autonomous underwater drone, the team found the wreckage about 2,000 feet below the surface last month and informed Puerto Rico’s governor’s office, NBC said. Discovery plans to feature the finding in “Expedition Unknown” this fall.
