DoorDash launches in-house drone unit -- "cleared for takeoff"
DoorDash received FAA Part 135 air carrier certification, enabling the company to launch its in-house drone program “DoorDash Air.” Announced Wednesday, the approval authorizes DoorDash to operate as an air carrier and deliver a more integrated drone experience for local businesses. DoorDash said it is only the eighth drone operator to earn Part 135 certification and that it completed a five-stage evaluation covering airworthiness, maintenance programs and safety procedures. The company says it will keep “Human Dashers” central for deliveries drones can’t handle, including apartment drop-offs and large orders. DoorDash reported that drone deliveries averaged about 25 minutes last year, and pilot locations saw order volume rise about 30%. The company plans further updates later this year.
