Drone crackdown: More than 500 seized since start of World Cup
Drone crackdown: More than 500 seized since start of World Cup underscores a widening FBI-led enforcement push against unauthorized drone flights near FIFA venues. Authorities seized more than 48 drones in Los Angeles, 98 in Miami, 29 in Seattle, 63 in Dallas, 77 in Atlanta, 40 in New York, nine in Newark and 33 in Houston. A Texas man, 26-year-old John Alexander Meza of La Porte, faces charges after allegedly flying a DJI Mavic 3 in restricted airspace in Houston on June 11, the tournament’s opening day. Prosecutors said he lacked a remote pilot license, did not check flight restrictions and did not register the drone with the FAA. The flight lasted about two minutes and reached just over 200 feet. The FAA designated “no drone zones” around stadiums and fan events as “national defense airspace.”
