EXCLUSIVE: Pakistan mediating Libya unity push as rival camps seek deal, Pakistani sources say
Pakistan has begun quietly mediating between Libya’s rival eastern and western power centers, according to two Pakistani sources, expanding Islamabad’s diplomatic footprint if the effort succeeds. The move follows months of monitoring a U.S.-led diplomatic push to resolve Libya’s split since the post-2011 NATO-backed uprising toppled Muammar Gaddafi. Pakistan has previously mediated between the U.S. and Iran this year, and one source said Washington was “fully aware and involved” in Pakistan’s role. Saudi Arabia is also supporting the initiative, with ties reinforced by a mutual defense pact signed last year. The sources said both Libyan sides requested Pakistan’s involvement late last year. Analysts said any reunification plan must balance foreign backers’ interests and settle disputes over posts, elections, and oil revenues, including a proposed 36-month transition featuring Abdulhamid Dbeibah and a role for Khalifa Haftar.
