Canada’s British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) is set to become a major testing ground for uncrewed systems, expanding drone activity across 2,700 square kilometres of prairie. The plan is part of the UK Defence Investment Plan and ties the scale of the Alberta site to “freedom” for testing and evaluation that is harder to replicate in the UK. It also positions Suffield as a complement to existing drone trial locations in the UK and Overseas Territories. Responsibility for coordinating the broader autonomy push will sit with a new Uncrewed Systems Centre in Swindon, funded with £310m and including the newly opened DroneTEX facility. The wider defence effort is described as the largest ever drone investment, with more than £5bn committed to autonomous systems by 2030. Multiple programmes, including CORVUS surveillance and NYX armed drones, are linked to the expanded trials.
