Former F1 supremo Ecclestone stopped in Portugal over shotgun on private jet

Former Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone was stopped at a Portuguese airport on Monday after police found a shotgun in his private jet luggage without the required paperwork. The 95-year-old, speaking to Reuters from Portugal, said he brought the firearm from Switzerland for a clay pigeon shooting event but lacked a “blue book” needed to import it. He landed with his wife, Fabiana Ecclestone, vice-president for sport at F1’s governing body, at Tires airfield near Cascais outside Lisbon. Portuguese newspapers said authorities discovered the gun during a routine check, and Fabiana later surrendered it in Lisbon. The incident echoes Ecclestone’s 2022 detention in Brazil over an unregistered handgun.
