Fourth of July weekend takes off with a 300-drone light show at the Interstate Center
Fourth of July weekend takes off with a 300-drone light show at the Interstate Center reports that Bloomington-Normal will kick off its Fourth of July celebrations with a 300-drone spectacle on Thursday at 9 p.m. at the Interstate Center. The event is described as the first of its kind for Bloomington-Normal, with a cost covered through support from State Farm, O’Brien Auto Group, Cybernautic, Stark Excavating, York Public Adjusting, Laborers Local 362 and Gibson Area Hospital, among others. Firefly Drone Shows was selected after coordination with the City of Bloomington and Mayor Dan Brady, handling everything from project planning and animations to day-of operations. The show is expected to last around 15 minutes.
Organizers said the display will feature custom designs that include traditional patriotic imagery along with animations specific to Bloomington-Normal and Illinois. Matthew Sanker, director of sales and lead producer at Firefly, said the production aims to tell a story across show segments and keep the experience engaging and personal. Drone shows are presented as environmentally friendly and compatible with pets and vets, as they produce no pollution and do not involve loud noises. Firefly, founded in 2017 and based in Detroit, Michigan, says its operators are FAA-licensed drone pilots, and it began preparations in late March, giving roughly three months for planning and site assessment.
