Boeing’s push to certify the world’s largest twin-engine jet next year is being shaped by an unresolved engineering reliability problem in the GE9X powerplant. GE Aerospace is addressing a crack discovered on the engine’s mid-seal, a component located between turbine stages that helps maintain airflow stability affecting power delivery and efficiency. The issue was first identified in January during a routine visit involving a Boeing 777-9 test aircraft, and GE later confirmed a durability concern after inspecting the engine. GE says a fix is being finalized and that the modification details have been shared with both Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration. While the design was certified in 2020, the new upgrade reflects typical evolution after operational discoveries.
