Homeland Security secretary's plane makes emergency landing

A Coast Guard jet carrying Markwayne Mullin, the U.S. homeland security secretary, made an emergency landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport around 1:35 p.m. Wednesday after an engine failure, according to airport officials. Mullin said on social media that the pilots handled the situation with “professionalism” and that there was “no panic.” The aircraft was a GulfStream C-37A, and an audio recording cited by authorities says the crew lost right engine power and declared an emergency, requesting immediate landing at DCA. The pilot reported 14 people on board and about 2.5 hours of fuel remaining. Reagan National’s Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said there was no disruption to other flights. The incident follows heightened scrutiny of safety procedures in Washington airspace after the January 2025 Black Hawk collision.
