How Airbus Engineered The A321XLR's Belly Tank To Survive A Crash Landing Without Rupturing
Airbus's A321XLR reaches its extended range through a radical structural feature: a permanent rear center tank integrated into the fuselage. The Rear Center Tank, holding 3,407 gallons (12,900 liters), is located behind the main landing gear and partly replaces rear cargo space. Airbus designed the tank as a structural element of the aircraft, so its walls contribute to the fuselage's load-bearing capacity and reduce the weight penalty of a standalone container. This design enables a 4,700-nautical-mile range, opening routes such as Madrid to Boston or London to Denver that previously required widebodies. Certification was among the most scrutinized in the A320 family. The FAA and EASA issued Special Conditions to ensure the tank could survive a crash without rupturing, prompting substantial changes to materials, structure, and the lower fuselage.
