How do you build a plane for a 22-hour journey?

Qantas and Airbus unveiled a world-first ultra-long-range program aimed at a 22-hour non-stop Sydney-to-London flight, slated to begin in October 2027. The A350-1000ULR will be deployed on the Kangaroo Route, spanning 10,573 miles, with a star-named livery honoring early navigation by Captain Crowther. Qantas has ordered twelve A350-1000ULRs, with the first due in April 2027 and five more by November that year; passenger service would commence shortly after. The plan, part of Project Sunrise, envisions a Sydney–New York route as well. The plan has faced supply-chain, certification, and post-pandemic labor challenges, but Qantas projects around $400 million annual earnings when fully operational, and a $3.2 billion plane program.
