How This New Mega Airport Will Change An Entire Continent
xCruzo Brief
Africa’s aviation growth forecast is colliding with a shortage of capacity and hubs—an issue Ethiopia is trying to tackle by building Bishoftu International Airport (BIA) near Addis Ababa. The project, partly funded by Ethiopian Airlines, is positioned to become the next global hub for Star Alliance partner traffic and compete with major gateways such as Istanbul Airport and Dubai International Airport. Construction began in January 2026, with phase one targeted for completion by 2030. Ethiopian is funding 30% of the $12.5 billion first phase. Capacity is planned at 60 million passengers annually initially, rising to 110 million when fully completed.
