Intercept Jets Near Trump at World Cup

NORAD intercepted multiple civilian aircraft after they violated temporary flight restrictions near President Donald Trump during the FIFA World Cup final in northern New Jersey. The command said more than 10 general aviation planes entered restricted airspace over Bedminster and East Rutherford on Sunday, prompting intercepts by F-16 fighter jets. In two cases, the jets deployed flares to attract pilots’ attention, using established safety procedures that burned out quickly and posed no danger to people on the ground. All aircraft were safely escorted out of the restricted airspace without incident, NORAD said. The temporary flight restrictions were part of security operations for Trump’s attendance at the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also attending. NORAD’s Gen. Gregory Guillot stressed pilots must review TFR procedures and NOTAMs before departure to avoid unauthorized entries. The command also reiterated emergency contact and maneuver steps if intercepted.
