Jetstar to charge for overhead carry-on bags -- See what other airlines are doing

Australian low-cost carrier Jetstar will begin charging for storing larger carry-on bags in overhead bins under a revised cabin baggage policy. Starting February 2027, travelers will pay A$25 to A$52 (about $18 to $37 USD) one way depending on the route if they want overhead storage for bags up to 22 pounds. The bags will no longer be weighed at the gate; the previous limit was 15 pounds. Jetstar also offers a prepaid “Priority Carry-on” add-on that includes priority boarding. Smaller personal items can still be stored under the seat for free. The airline says the change reduces stress at gates and improves on-time departures. Critics, including opposition Sen. Bridget McKenzie, call it a “cash grab.”
