Lockheed Built The Constellation's Famous Triple Tail For One Key Reason -- To Fit Inside An Airline's Existing Hangars
Lockheed developed the Lockheed Constellation’s distinctive triple-tail design for a practical reason: fitting inside TWA’s existing hangar doors. The requirement emerged in 1939 when Trans World Airlines asked for a long-range, pressurized airliner, including performance goals such as a 6,000-lb (2,720 kg) payload and 3,500-mile (5,630 km) range without payload, plus cruise speeds above 250 mph (402 km/h) at 20,000 feet (6,096 meters). A single large vertical stabilizer capable of delivering directional stability for the Constellation’s size and four-engine configuration would have made the aircraft too tall for the hangar. Engineers led by Hall Hibbard and Kelly Johnson instead split the needed fin area into three shorter vertical stabilizers mounted across the horizontal tailplane, keeping the overall height to 23 feet 8 inches (7.2 meters). The design allowed TWA to use the aircraft within its maintenance infrastructure, and Lockheed produced 856 Constellations across variants before the propeller era ended.
