Lufthansa Group's Hubs: How Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich & Vienna Compare
Lufthansa Group runs a multi-hub network rather than concentrating everything into one mega-airport. Instead of a single-point strategy, it coordinates operations through Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC) in Germany, plus Zurich (ZRH) and Vienna (VIE). The approach is designed to disperse long-haul widebodies and regional traffic, balancing capacity allocation and yield protection across Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines. FRA handled 63.2 million passengers in 2025, up 2.6% but still about 10% below pre-pandemic levels, while MUC processed 43.4 million, up 4.4% and reaching 91% of its 2019 total. For summer 2026, the group cut short-haul capacity disproportionately at FRA and MUC to counter rising jet-fuel costs amid congestion and night-flight restrictions.
