Spain’s Canary Islands have issued a coastal alert for five islands popular with British holidaymakers as strong winds and rough seas are expected to create dangerous conditions. The Canary Islands Government said waves could reach up to 3 metres, with hazardous currents along parts of the shoreline. The alert, activated under the Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Risks (PEFMA) by the Directorate General for Emergencies, covers Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Strengthening north-easterly winds, especially in channels between islands, are forecast to hit Force 7 gusts on the Beaufort scale (50–61 km/h) and produce two-to-three metre combined waves. Winds have already contributed to an aborted landing at Lanzarote Airport.
