WestJet Launches 1st-Ever Boeing 737 MAX Flight To The UK's 19th-Busiest Airport
WestJet has inaugurated its first nonstop service from Toronto Pearson to Cardiff, marking its entry into the Welsh market and restoring direct Canada-Wales connectivity after 18 years. The inaugural Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight departed Toronto on May 22 and arrived in Cardiff the following morning, with four weekly rotations planned during the peak summer season. Cardiff Airport is ranked as the UK’s 19th-busiest by passenger traffic, and the new service provides long-haul connectivity that Cardiff had lacked since 2008. WestJet’s MAX 8 strategy targets thinner transatlantic markets and lower operating costs, expanding a transatlantic network built on a narrowbody platform. The 5,500-kilometer route underscores Cardiff’s evolving role as a gateway to North America, while the broader industry trend shifts toward point-to-point transatlantic services that connect secondary markets with Canada and beyond.
