Non-Rev Flight Attendants at United Airlines Can Now Skip the Jumpseat For the Secret Bunks... Here's How it Will Work

United Airlines’ flight attendants who travel on their non-rev staff privileges will be allowed to use the airline’s “secret crew bunks” on certain international widebody aircraft, under a new policy agreed with the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA). The bunks—officially the “Overhead Flight Attendant Rest” (OFAR) on Boeing 777s and 787 Dreamliners—are intended for non-rev crew who would otherwise be stuck only in a jumpseat during long-haul flights. Use is limited: bunks are only for flight attendants assigned a jumpseat, only for United staff (not other airlines’ jumpseaters), and cannot be shared. Availability depends on aircraft type and crew count, with access in seniority order if multiple non-rev jumpseaters exist. Bunks can only be used at altitude thresholds (15,000 feet on 787s; 25,000 feet on 777s), and non-rev crew must avoid disturbing operating crew during breaks.
