Part 2: How Prince Albert's airport became a wartime flight school for pilots from across the globe
xCruzo Brief
In postwar Saskatchewan, Fred Glass—an aviation pioneer—was hired as the first general manager of Saskatchewan Government Airways, Canada’s first provincial government-owned commercial airline, according to the account of Dan Glass of Mitchinson Flight Centre. The airline helped open up northern regions as mining, exploration and discoveries like Uranium City emerged in the mid-to-late 1940s. With SGA, Glass also helped create Canada’s first smokejumpers program, training pilots to drop firefighters from a modified plane into fresh fires. Glass later launched his own regional airline, supported by a contract flying concrete for radar stations on the Mid-Continent line in 1950.
