The Concorde crash of July 25, 2000, which killed 113, is revisited in reporting that highlights the captain’s last recorded words and the causal chain after a runway incident. The aircraft, a Concorde chartered by German cruise operator Peter Deilmann, carried 100 passengers, six cabin crew, two pilots and a flight engineer. Shortly before departure from Charles de Gaulle near Paris bound for JFK, a Continental Airlines DC-10 shed a small titanium strip onto runway 26R. As Air France flight AF4590 accelerated at more than 180 mph, it struck the strip with a tyre, hitting at a speed above the flight’s V1 marker, which was 173 mph that day. The damaged tyre led to rubber fragment impact, fuel-tank breach, fire and the crew being unable to retract landing gear, preventing arrival at Le Bourget. The captain Christian Marty said “Too late...No time,” according to the Guardian, before the aircraft struck the Hotellissimo Les Relais Bleus hotel in Gonesse.
