Rabies alert: Dead raccoon tests positive in DeKalb County

A dead raccoon tested positive for rabies on Friday in the Meadow Rock area of DeKalb County, Georgia. County officials said Georgia is rabies-endemic and that the virus remains active year-round. They noted it’s routine for the area to report several rabies cases annually. The guidance to residents focuses on prevention: keep pet rabies vaccinations up to date and register rabies vaccination tags with DeKalb County Animal Control. Officials also urged residents to remove outdoor feeding stations and secure garbage cans to reduce interactions between wildlife and people. Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should seek medical attention immediately.
