Rolls's record engine revival
Rolls-Royce’s long turnaround at its Derby campus—employing 15,000 people—has shifted from crisis response to engine-upgrade momentum, focused on fixing issues tied to its Trent 1000. The company reopened a 1920s hangar in 2022, which had been derelict for decades, after major problems involving cracks and erosion led to costly setbacks. Under CEO Tufan Erginbilgic, who took over in 2023 and drove the group back to profitability after a pandemic near-collapse, Rolls-Royce is now working both to strengthen ties with airlines affected by Trent 1000 problems and to win new customers. A redesigned turbine blade targets hotter, high-stress operation by improving cooling through changed cooling-hole patterns and reshaping. Rolls-Royce says the redesign improves blade cooling by 40%, has updated nearly half its Trent 1000 engines, and aims to triple “time on wing” versus previous levels.
