Russian industry ponders re-engining SaM146-powered Superjets with PD-8

Russian industry is weighing whether to re-engine Yakovlev Superjet 100 aircraft powered by Aviadvigatel SaM146 engines with the domestically certified PD-8. The question follows Russia’s certification of the PD-8 for the import-substituted SJ-100, while the ministry of industry and trade has been researching replacing the foreign-supplied PowerJet SaM146 on in-service Superjets. Kommersant, citing United Aircraft estimates, said as many as 50 Superjets—about one-third of the fleet—could be converted, with total work costs estimated at Rb115 billion (about $1.5 billion). Industry ministry coverage is described as half the cost, with initial replacements planned for late 2029, but the final number has not been determined. Industry minister Anton Alikhanov said United Aircraft and operators must develop a financial model to ensure benefits for both sides, implying re-engining could be more likely for younger airframes. Rosaviatsia granted formal certification for the PD-8 in June.
