Should All Airlines Serve Complimentary Snacks On Short Flights?

A debate is underway over whether airlines should provide complimentary snacks on short flights. The discussion centers on the trade-off between passenger expectations and operational constraints. Many carriers argue that short segments don’t leave enough time to serve food safely, citing crew safety as the main reason some airlines have dropped free snack services on shorter routes. In the United States, the “Big Three” carriers—American, Delta and United—do not serve snacks under certain distance ranges, specifically AA and DL under 250 miles and UA under 300 miles. Outside the US, some markets include a hot drink and snack with the fare, raising the question of whether all airlines should follow that model.
