Sorry tourist, Barcelona sold out': The outpouring of fury at Spain's airport plan

Thousands of protesters in Barcelona demanded changes to a government-approved airport expansion they say will worsen overtourism and environmental risks. Demonstrations on Sunday opposed the €3.2bn plan to raise passenger capacity from 55 million a year to 70 million by 2038. Locals carried signs including “Sorry tourist, BCN is already sold out,” while others staged mock airport boards and highlighted threatened wetlands with a giant white stork figure. The protests spread across Spain, including Malaga, Madrid, Ibiza, the Canary Islands and Mallorca. In Palma, campaigners protested alleged new international routes and demanded limits on private jets after claims the island exceeds a 66 flights-per-hour operational cap.
