South African airline behind daring stadium stunt cancels next flyby, regulator says

South African airline Airlink will not repeat this Saturday’s close-formation aerial stunt over a stadium, the aviation regulator SACAA said. The decision comes after the agency approved the original applications and safety measures, but is now investigating further following “discussions in the media.” SACAA said Airlink had planned a flyby over Soweto’s DHL Stadium for the third Test between the Springboks and New Zealand’s All Blacks, then cancelled it. Flight tracking analysis by Flightradar24 said the lead aircraft passed less than 50ft (15m) above the stadium. Airlink previously said the flights were conducted within approved and rehearsed altitude and speed limits by a “highly experienced crew.” SACAA added it has obtained flight data recording downloads and other items for analysis.
