Space Ops Chief Issues Launch Cap Warning | Aviation Week: the departing U.S. Chief of Space Operations warned that the Pentagon may need to cap launch activity if aging infrastructure cannot be modernized and expanded. Gen. B. Chance Saltzman made the remarks in London on the sidelines of the Global Air & Space Conference. He said launch tempo has surged since the creation of the U.S. Space Force, with operational rates increasing 1,100%. The current pace “starts to put stress” on facilities designed for different operations, potentially creating a fundamental limitation. The Pentagon’s priorities include a record $71.1 billion fiscal 2027 budget request with an emphasis on expanding launch infrastructure. Saltzman also cited efforts such as building additional launchpads, contracting with commercial vendors, and increasing security forces. Infrastructure upgrades are also needed to support fueling and handling requirements, including methane and liquid oxygen, along with basic items like road maintenance.
