Syrian Airlines launches first flight from Amsterdam to Damascus after years of suspension, media says
Syrian Airlines launched its first direct flight from Amsterdam Schiphol to Damascus in years, restarting a route that had been suspended for nearly 14 years. According to Syria’s state news agency SANA, the Thursday flight marked the resumption of direct service between the Netherlands and Syria and was part of a plan by Syria’s national carrier to restore and expand European destinations. Direct flights between European airports and Syria have been gradually returning after the suspension began around 2012 amid security instability and later international risk classifications. Alongside the Amsterdam–Damascus route, Romania’s Dan Air began operating Bucharest–Aleppo flights on July 1; Dan Air had resumed flights to Damascus in June 2025. In Germany, preparations are underway for a Berlin–Damascus direct route in early August. Syria’s General Civil Aviation Authority said the number of airlines resuming flights had risen to 12 by June.
