Syrian Airlines resumes direct Amsterdam-Damascus flights after years-long hiatus
Syrian Airlines resumed direct Amsterdam–Damascus flights on Thursday after a years-long suspension, according to SANA. The first nonstop service arrived at Damascus International Airport, marking the carrier’s return to the route after extensive technical, legal, and diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring its presence in European markets. Syrian Aviation Holding Company CEO Anwar Aqqad said the connection is important for Syrian expatriates linking them with their homeland, and he described it as the first step toward announcing additional international destinations. The airline started operating three weekly flights on the Damascus–Amsterdam route, with plans to adjust frequency depending on developments in air traffic exchange. Aqqad added that the carrier has been rebuilding its fleet and has introduced digital booking and payment services. SANA also reported that passenger traffic at Damascus International Airport surpassed 148,000 in May 2026 and that 12 airlines are currently operating to and from Syria, while civil aviation authorities are in talks with other European countries to restore direct links.
