Ten people died after a small aircraft crash in the Bahamas during a short trip estimated at about 20 minutes. The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Friday in North Andros, west of Nassau, according to the Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority. Officials said the Flamingo Air plane departed Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, heading roughly 40 miles to San Andros Airport, when it “reportedly encountered difficulties” before coming down in a bushy area. The aircraft was identified as a Cessna 402 with registration C6-FLX, and Flamingo Air confirmed ownership. Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis said the national independence celebration had turned into “a day of mourning.” Police compiled a victims list, with identities expected to be released after family verification. The Bahamas Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Aviation said Flamingo Air’s operator certificate was temporarily suspended as a precaution due to a second safety incident that day, and the crash remains under investigation by a team in Andros.
