Blackpool Air Show is tracing more than a century of aviation history, beginning with Blackpool Aviation Week at Squires Gate in October 1909. More than 200,000 people attended the first event, when flying was still seen as miraculous. Pioneers such as Henri Farman and Louis Paulhan took to the skies despite “Blackpool-esque” conditions, with strong winds threatening to keep aircraft grounded. Farman’s eventual takeoff sparked cheers and helped establish a tradition lasting over 100 years. After the First World War, Blackpool became a public hub for “barnstorming.” During World War II, Squires Gate was requisitioned as RAF base and residents raised funds in 1940 for three Spitfires. Today, it remains a major free event with months of planning involving VisitBlackpool, the RAF, the Civil Aviation Authority, and emergency services.
