The Flight': After Iran Shot Down Ukraine Plane, Doc Follows Victims' Families Fight for Justice

Kurdish-Canadian director Soran Mardookhi’s new documentary The Flight premiered at the Vancouver Film Festival, revisiting the Jan. 2020 downing of Ukraine Airlines Flight PS752 shortly after departing an airport near Tehran. All 176 passengers and crew died after Iranian surface-to-air missiles brought down the Boeing 737. Mardookhi says his film isn’t about Middle East politics, but about the families who, he says, were sidelined as Iranian authorities first covered up the tragedy. Centering Iranian-Canadian victims, many university students and young children, the documentary follows the creation of the Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims and their ongoing push for accountability and disclosure of what drove the strike.
