Tourists killed in plane crash near Peru's famed Nazca Lines during viewing flight

A small plane carrying European tourists crashed Saturday outside Nazca, Peru, near the famed Nazca Lines, killing 13 people, local authorities said. The municipal government of Nazca said the aircraft departed from the nearby city of Ica and was operated by the Peruvian company Aerodiana. According to the airline’s website, it has offered scenic flights over the Nazca Lines for 14 years using Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft. Among the victims were seven Italian citizens aged 18 to 54, two 52-year-old Spaniards, and two German passengers aged 77 and 78. Peruvian officials also identified pilot Américo Salazar and copilot Irenka Guanilo del Carpio. President Keiko Fujimori expressed regret and said a “temporary suspension” of the airport was being considered; authorities said the crash is under investigation.
