Trump says he threatened Canada tariffs over friend's Gulfstream jet tiff

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his threat to impose 50% tariffs on every aircraft Canada sells into the US was triggered by a friend who struggled to buy a Gulfstream private jet. Speaking in the Oval Office during an event marking the summer travel season, Trump described calling Gulfstream after being put in touch by the friend. He claimed Gulfstream spent “$60 million” over about nine years to obtain Canadian certification, before saying it was completed “in two hours” after he raised tariffs—while noting a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney. However, Transport Canada certified specific Gulfstream models on Feb. 16 and Feb. 23, and no tariff was imposed.
