Trying to Advance Hydrogen Aviation. Likelihood by 2050 is still under 1%

Advancing hydrogen-powered aviation remains far from a near-term commercial reality, according to an updated analysis tied to the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s new Hydrogen Challenge. The regulator is examining hydrogen aircraft turnarounds at London City Airport, along with cryogenic hydrogen storage and airside supply, while its broader roadmap targets scaled operations for small aircraft by 2035. Manufacturers and startups are also pushing certification work: Airbus and MTU are working toward a certifiable hydrogen fuel-cell aviation engine, and ZeroAvia has reported FAA certification progress with a 600 kW electric engine. The updated assessment concludes that even when factoring reasonable mission and infrastructure assumptions, the most plausible clean-sheet conventional hydrogen route reaches only about 3% for an operator-ready aircraft by 2050, and adding airport network and fleet-scale requirements drives the overall medium-haul passenger system to below 1%.
