United Airlines Flight From Rome Diverted to Ireland After Engine Issue

United Airlines’ transatlantic Flight 509 was diverted to Ireland after the crew detected an engine issue while crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The aircraft, carrying 227 people, landed safely in Shannon after more than four hours in the air, with no injuries reported. The flight departed Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport near Rome at 1:36 p.m. local time on Saturday, July 11. About three hours after takeoff, flight tracking data showed the Boeing 767-400 turning north toward Shannon. According to reports, pilots identified unusual vibrations from the right engine and later an unusual odor in the cabin, then requested clearance to divert and asked for fire and rescue standby. United said it arranged hotel accommodations, compensation, and rebookings. The Irish Aviation Authority had not issued a statement at time of writing.
