United cancels 9/11 Denver flyover with plane, fighter jets, citing public concerns

United Airlines canceled a planned Sept. 11 commemoration flyover at Denver International Airport after citing “concerns in the community.” The event, scheduled for Friday to mark the 25th anniversary, was set for 9:03 a.m.—the exact moment terrorists crashed United Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. United originally planned a Boeing 777 followed by four fighter jets. In a statement Wednesday, the airline said the flyover was suspended, with spokesperson Russell Carlton saying the company would pause the gesture because of community concerns while continuing other parts of the day’s program. The flight was private and not open to the public, though Denver and emergency management had posted information beforehand. United said it will still unveil a 9-foot-11-inch steel monument at its Flight Training Center.
