Years post 9/11, a grieving sister finds peace at United 93 crash site

On the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, NPR reported on the Flight 93 crash site in western Pennsylvania and how a sister of one victim found peace there years later. The program marked that Flight 93 crashed in 2001 after passengers and crew tried to retake control from hijackers. Ahead of earlier milestones, NPR producer Scott Detrow created the documentary “Sacred Ground,” working with Tim Lambert, a reporter at WITF in Harrisburg, and with access to families connected to the crash-area land. Detrow said the site transformed from a burned, fuel-scented “hellscape” into a memorial centered on wildflowers, shifting the families’ feelings from pain to healing. The segment included Lori Guadagno’s recollections of her brother Richard and the final moments before 9/11.
