'aircraft mishap' causes fire at San Diego Marine base

An “aircraft mishap” at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego Friday triggered heavy smoke near the flight line, Marine officials said. Smoke was spotted around 10 a.m., and emergency crews responded to an F-35 incident, spokesperson Capt. Steven Keenan confirmed. The pilot ejected and has been recovered. The aircraft is assigned to 3rd Marine Air Wing, Marine Air Group 11. News helicopter footage showed dense smoke and what appeared to be a burned aircraft east of the runways. Officials said the incident is under investigation. The event comes about 18 months after an EA-18G Growler crashed into San Diego Bay during landing attempts.
